As a leading custom porcine tissue supplier, Tissue Source understands the critical role high-quality biological materials play in advancing scientific understanding and developing new treatments. All of our porcine tissue comes from farms and abattoirs we’ve spent years building relationships with to ensure the best possible end product.
Tissue Source’s Porcine Production Process
Our goal is to provide tissue that is highly customizable to the specifications of our customers, without sacrificing quality. To do so, we procure tissue from animals with a standardized process, including the following steps:
- Breeding and Farrowing
- Weaning
- Finishing
- Processing
- Customization
Breeding and Farrowing
The gestation period for pigs averages around 114 days, and most litters have 6-13 piglets. We breed gilts (a pig who has not had a litter) once they reach 6-8 months of age. We wait until at least three days post-weaning before a sow can be bred again.
Weaning
We introduce regular pig feed to our litters at 10-12 days of age, and allow them to stay with their mother until three to four weeks. In this time they grow from a birth weight of 2-4 pounds to approximately 10-15 pounds. Once weaned, piglets move to a nursery until they reach a weight of 40-60 pounds.
Finishing
Once pigs have reached 40-60 pounds in weight and are about 8 weeks old, they are moved to our finishing barns. They will remain here until they reach market weight, which can be anywhere from 180 to 300 pounds on average.
Processing
After they’ve reached market weight, pigs are sold to an approved abattoir for processing. Most market-weight pigs are about 5-6 months old and weigh 180-300 pounds.
Customization
We can accommodate a wide variety of custom requirements to meet your needs, such as animal age, gender, or weight. We maintain a close relationship with the farms our animals are raised on that allows us to adjust the production process at any point to, whether that involves basic weight and gender options or specified diets and custom processing.
Why You Can Trust Our Porcine Tissue
At Tissue Source, we recognize the varied needs of the clients we serve, including medical, scientific, and educational communities.
We offer a comprehensive range of customizable animal tissue options to meet your specific requirements:
- Meticulous Processing: Maintain the integrity of your experiments with custom rinse solutions, packaging, shipping temperature ranges, and logistical options to meet your needs.
- Customized Quantities: We offer the volume you need, whether you require large quantities for extensive studies or small tissue samples for focused experiments.
- Traceability: We prioritize your research needs by providing detailed lineage information for our tissues, tracing them back to individual animals or lots as needed. If traceability is not required, we focus on cost-effective solutions.

What is Tissue Source?
Tissue Source is a porcine-derived raw material supplier that procures and supplies porcine tissues, tailored precisely to the needs of our clients in the medical field. We strive to empower researchers, medical professionals, and biotech companies worldwide to achieve their goals in advancing scientific knowledge and improving human health.
Why Does Porcine Pricing Vary?
Pig prices vary cyclically and seasonally. Cyclical variation is caused by the time lags inherent to biological production. When prices are high, more sows are bred and more pigs are produced. Supplies increase and prices fall, thus causing a price cycle. Seasonal variation is caused by changes in production efficiency due to weather and different demand levels.
How are Pigs Housed for Porcine Tissue Production?
Most housing for pigs has slotted floors that allow the pigs’ waste to fall through into a holding pit or gutter. This keeps the floors drier and cleaner and makes it easier to provide the correct environment to keep pigs comfortable and productive, as well as minimizing disease and biohazards.
