Uses of Pig Blood in Science, Medicine, and Industry

While porcine organs are more routinely used in medical and scientific fields, pig blood and bodily fluids also play a large role. Like organs, pig blood is similar in structure and function to human blood, making it a viable model in various applications such as medical device testing and studying disease.

Scientific Applications and Research

Use in Immunology and T-Cell Research

Pigs are incredibly useful in immunology studies, as both pigs blood and their overall immune system are quite similar to that of humans. Not only that, pigs are susceptible to many of the same diseases as humans, making them an effective model to study disease.

One study examined how porcine T-cells regulate immune responses by analyzing their production of cytokines and other immune-related molecules. It concluded that porcine T-cells exhibit functional similarities to human T-cells, making pig models reliable for studying the immune system and advancing immunological therapies.

Translational Research

As the porcine model continues to evolve, verifying when pig blood is a viable substitute and when it falls short is imperative.

To further analyze the efficacy of animal blood in various settings, a recent study focused on how blood viscosity varies between species, including that of pigs. They discovered that while pigs blood mimics human blood well under high-flow conditions, it performs suboptimally in low-flow conditions. Their findings provide valuable insights as to when pig blood is an effective substitute for human blood, and identifying conditions when it may not be the optimal choice.

Medical Applications

Potential Supply for Human Blood Transfusions

While the similarity of human and pig blood makes the latter useful in various scientific applications, it also shows promise for a one-to-one replacement for human blood. The demand for blood often outstrips the available supply, which can result in clinical harm for patients who need transfusions.

Following in the footsteps of gene-edited pig organs, pig red blood cells offer an alternative to human red blood cell transfusions. Researchers are exploring whether genetically modifying pig blood to limit immunogenicity and increase the expression of protective proteins found in human blood will make it a viable and plentiful alternative that can reduce shortages worldwide.

Testing Medical Devices

Medical devices can improve patient outcomes and create less invasive treatment options, but they require multiple tests prior to use on humans. Devices and instruments that are used in cardiovascular and other similar applications often must be small and be precisely placed, which makes testing them all the more challenging.

A recent test on an intravascular untethered robot used a pig’s circulatory system tissues such as blood and a heart to help understand the robot’s capabilities within an actual patient. Researchers were able to use an ex vivo model to show the robot could move with precision both with and against blood flow.

Porcine Blood Plasma

Porcine plasma is used in a variety of medical and scientific applications, perhaps most notably in a spray-dried porcine plasma (SDP) form. Most are currently in animal trials and studies, but they offer up future potential for human applications. Recent applications include:
